What is a palmtop? How does it compare to a laptop?

Question by pam: What is a palmtop? How does it compare to a laptop?
My daughter is entering college and has asked for a laptop. She really likes the one her physican uses as it is really small and not cumbersome. However, will this palmtop serve her well with term papers, essays, anime clipart etc......Obviously it won't have the memory that a larger laptop would, but does it have what is needed for a college student?
